Широко распространенная в США спортивная игра, похожая на бейсбол [baseball]. Игра идет на поле меньшего размера с использованием более крупного, чем в бейсболе, мяча. Игра возникла в 1887 в г. Чикаго как вариант бейсбола для закрытых помещений, ныне в нее играют на открытом воздухе. Правила игры были стандартизованы в 1923, они проще бейсбольных. В софтбол играют и женщины. Существуют две разновидности игры: с быстрой подачей [fast pitch] и с медленной подачей [slow pitch]. В начале 1990-х в США этой игрой увлекалось около 40 млн. человек. В 1970-х были сформированы лиги профессионального софтбола: мужская Американская профессиональная лига софтбола медленной подачи [American Professional Slo-Pitch League] и Профессиональная женская лига софтбола быстрой подачи [Women's Professional Fast-Pitch League]. В 1933 основана Ассоциация любительского софтбола [Amateur Softball Association] (обеих разновидностей), в составе которой 259 тыс. команд (1992). В 1968 создана также Американская ассоциация софтбола медленной подачи [United States Slo-Pitch Softball Association (USSSA)], в составе которой к 1992 насчитывалось 100 тыс. команд.
